CUT A TIE PAGE 2   NEXT PAGE    PREVIOUS PAGE

Turn the log to prepare to open the third side. Cutting this side will determine the orientation of the tie. We see that cutting at 11-3/8" will give a good face without a thick slab, so we cut. (this will result in a 9" tie, two 1-1/16" flooring boards and two 1/8" kerfs) (9", 10-3/16", 11-3/8") BUT, we will turn the log to the last face without cutting more. Since we made the last face to open up at 9", we must make this face work out to 7". That means the cuts will be at 7", 8-3/16", 9-3/8", 10-9/16", 11-3/4", and so on. We see that the first cut will work out at 10-9/16". So we get three boards out down to 7". Now we cut this side at 10-9/16", remove the slab and cut again at 9-3/8".
