What to do with small hardwood logs to increase yield?

Here is how we process a 6-1/4" and a 8-1/2" hardwood log.We cut 3X4" blocking that is nominal. (2-1/2" X 3-1/2"),and 4/4 flooring lumber, (1-1/16" thick). This helps squeeze more scale from the logs. Cutting thinner lumber is not recommended. Thinner lumber takes more cutting in the dirtiest part of the bark, dulls blades, needs extra processing, needs extra grading, makes one more product to deal with, slowing the ability to fill loads quickly for shipment. It takes longer to process each log on your mill, dropping your daily production, thus dropping your daily income. It is true you might make pennies more per log cutting thin pallet boards. But you will definitely make less money per day and have more clutter around the mill. The bottom line on what to cut is not necessarily what you have, but who you know that wants what.
