This is how we process flooring lumber and 7"X 9"X 8'-8" cross ties from logs 11" and larger. This example is with a 14" oak log.

We position and level the log. First cut at 12-13/16", turn log. Cut at 12-1/2". We cut just deep enough to open up a face for a four inch wide board if it were edged. Turn the log to prepare to open the third side.
